Water Boilers

Shown here are the most common types of water heaters – storage tanks heated by natural gas or electricity. Standard gas water heaters are generally more cost-effective to operate than standard electric heaters, though they tend to have a higher upfront cost.

There are also more energy-efficient options available. Electric heat pump water heaters use up to 60% less energy than standard electric models. For larger volumes of hot water (over 55 gallons), such as in commercial properties, natural gas condensing water heaters are a more efficient choice.

Forced Air Furnaces / Heaters

Forced air heaters can be powered by natural gas (or propane), electricity, or oil. These units are typically installed alongside central air conditioning systems. The system delivers air through ductwork and out vents, with a large fan, known as an air handler, forcing the heated or cooled air through the HVAC system.

The operational costs for gas, electric, or oil-powered systems largely depend on your location, as energy prices for each can vary significantly.

Heat Pumps

Electric heat pumps function similarly to air conditioners, providing both heating and cooling. They work by extracting either heat or cold from the outside air or ground and transferring it to the rooms inside. Heat pumps operate as both central heating and air conditioning systems, delivering forced air from a compressor through air handlers, ducts, and vents.

Heat pumps tend to be more energy-efficient than standalone electric furnaces and air conditioners, but the initial costs of the units, installation, and ongoing maintenance may be higher. Energy costs for heat pumps can fluctuate, and whether they will save money in the long term compared to gas, oil, or electric furnaces depends on the relative running costs of each type of energy.

Radiant Floor Heating

Radiant floor heating is an attractive alternative heating system, especially suitable for new installations or when flooring is being replaced. This system operates by running heated water from a water boiler through tubing beneath the floor, allowing heat to rise naturally from the floor upwards. It is known for being one of the most cost-efficient heating systems to operate.
